Supporting Inclusive Learning Using Chatbots? A Chatbot-Led Interview Study

    Get PDF
Supporting student academic success has been one of the major goals for higher education. However, low teacher-to-student ratio makes it difficult for students to receive sufficient and personalized support that they might want to. The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and conversational agents, such as chatbots, has provided opportunities for assisting learning for different types of students. This research aims at investigating the opportunities and requirements of chatbots as an intelligent helper to facilitate equity in learning. We developed a chatbot as an experimental platform to investigate the design opportunities of using chatbots to support inclusive learning. Through a chatbot-led user study with 215 undergraduate students, we found chatbots provide the opportunity to support students who are disadvantaged, with diverse life environments, and with varied learning styles. This could be achieved through an accessible, interactive, and confidential way

If I Hear You Correctly: Building and Evaluating Interview Chatbots with Active Listening Skills

Interview chatbots engage users in a text-based conversation to draw out their views and opinions. It is, however, challenging to build effective interview chatbots that can handle user free-text responses to open-ended questions and deliver engaging user experience. As the first step, we are investigating the feasibility and effectiveness of using publicly available, practical AI technologies to build effective interview chatbots. To demonstrate feasibility, we built a prototype scoped to enable interview chatbots with a subset of active listening skills - the abilities to comprehend a user's input and respond properly. To evaluate the effectiveness of our prototype, we compared the performance of interview chatbots with or without active listening skills on four common interview topics in a live evaluation with 206 users. Our work presents practical design implications for building effective interview chatbots, hybrid chatbot platforms, and empathetic chatbots beyond interview tasks.Comment: Working draft. Fingerprint-based voting machines are a recent development in electronic voting that could improve election security and accuracy. These gadgets use biometric identification to ensure that only eligible voters can cast ballots. This paper examines the potential for fingerprint-based voting machines in electoral systems, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the technology. By a review of the literature and case studies, this research study investigates the effectiveness of fingerprint-based voting machines in ensuring secure and trustworthy voting procedures. It examines the practical and technological challenges of utilizing thistechnology as well asthe privacy concerns brought up by the use of biometric data. This paper concludes with recommendations for policymakers and electoral authorities on the best practices for adopting fingerprint- based voting machines inorder to promote transparency, accountability, and public trust in electoral processes

Artificially Intelligent (AI) Drones for First Responders

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1.35 million people died as a result of road traffic accidents every year. Timely assistance and rescue from first responders play a critical role in such accidents. In the meantime, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, have been proposed an assistive technology ranging from helping with indoor errands to serving as outdoor assistants for surveillance, delivery, and companionship. This paper aims at understanding the opportunities and concerns of using drones to assist first responders in traffic accidents. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 participants who are regular commuters and drivers. We found that drones are promising in providing accessibility to first responders in tight situations, timeliness of alerting emergency services, and real-time traffic management information. The benefits would allow for a quick basic medical response until services arrive, have a means for two-way communication between motorists and responders, and be able to deliver aid in remote areas

Supporting student academic success has been one of the major goals for higher education. However, low teacher-to-student ratio makes it difficult for students to receive sufficient support and guidance that they might want to. The advancement of AI and conversational agents, such as chatbots, has provided opportunities for assisting student learning. This research in progress aims at investigating the opportunities and requirements of chatbots as intelligent tutors to support student learning. We developed a chatbot as an experimental platform to investigate the design opportunities of using chatbots as an intelligent tutor. Through a chatbot-led user study with 215 undergraduate students, we found chatbot could serve as an intelligent tutor by answering student questions, creating an environment for advanced learning, and support student life and wellbeing in an accessible, interactive, and privacy-enhanced way. We then pointed out future work
